Worked out from Morwen B. Thistlethwaite, 45-52 move strategy for the Rubik's Cube (subgroup chain G0 > G1 > G2 > G3 > G4) and 3 other sources.
How this is worked out
9 steps
- Apply the 7-move scramble to a solved cube.
- Read the state: 4 of 8 corners and 9 of 12 edges are in their home slot; 3 corners are twisted and 0 edges are flipped.
- Check the three laws of the cube: total corner twist is 0 mod 3, total edge flip is 0 mod 2, and the corner and edge permutations have the same parity. All three hold, so the state is reachable by legal turns.
- Phase 1 (to G1: orient edges): already there
- Phase 2 (to G2: orient corners, place the E-slice): R U2 R' U' R U' R
- Phase 3 (to G3: place every cubie in its orbit): already there
- Phase 4 (to solved: double turns only): R2
- Cancel turns of the same face where they meet, giving 7 moves (8 quarter turns): R U2 R' U' R U' R'
- Replay the solution on the entered state: the cube comes out solved.
Moves used in each Thistlethwaite phasetable
Phase 1 (to G1: orient edges): already there, Phase 2 (to G2: orient corners, place the E-slice): R U2 R' U' R U' R, Phase 3 (to G3: place every cubie in its orbit): already there, Phase 4 (to solved: double turns only): R2
