Worked out from Teasdale G, Jennett B. Assessment of coma and impaired consciousness: a practical scale and 3 other sources.
A structured observation, not a diagnosis. The total conceals which component is impaired, and sedation, intoxication, paralysis and intubation all confound it. Any deterioration in GCS is an emergency for a clinician, not a calculator.

How this is worked out

3 steps
  1. Eye 4, verbal 5, motor 6.
  2. Total = 4 + 5 + 6 = 15.
  3. Mild brain injury (13-15).
