New Jersey Division of Taxation, 2026 Form NJ-1040-ES Instructions, Tax Rate Schedules Table A and Table B and exemptions; NJ Income Tax Rates page (updated 24 March 2026, schedules "2020 and After"); corroborated by pack B (njtaxratesch.pdf) (https://www.nj.gov/treasury/unclaimed-property/treasury/taxation/pdf/current/1040esi.pdf)
Tax year of the schedule
2026
Worked out from Franchise Tax Board, 2025 California Tax Rate Schedules and 22 other sources.
Rates and brackets unchanged for 2026 (the same schedules have applied since 2020). Single and married filing separately use Table A (1.4% to $20,000 ... 10.75% above $1,000,000); married filing jointly, head of household and qualifying widow(er) use Table B (with the extra 2.45% band from $50,000 to $70,000). The Division's subtraction amounts (for example $32,926.25 at the 10.75% row of Table A, $34,842.50 in Table B) are reproduced exactly by these marginal brackets. New Jersey computes gross income under its own rules, has no standard deduction, and allows $1,000 personal exemptions and $1,500 per dependent.
An estimate from each state's published rate schedule. State credits, add-backs, part-year and non-resident apportionment, and local taxes other than New York City are not modelled. Check your state return or a tax professional before relying on it.
How this is worked out
9 steps
- New Jersey (tax year 2026): New Jersey computes gross income under its own rules; it does not start from federal AGI.
- Income 85000 less deduction 0 and exemptions 1000 = taxable income 84000
- Exemptions: 1000 for the taxpayer(s)
- 1.4% on 20000 (0 to 20000) = 280
- 1.75% on 15000 (20000 to 35000) = 262.5
- 3.5% on 5000 (35000 to 40000) = 175
- 5.525% on 35000 (40000 to 75000) = 1933.75
- 6.37% on 9000 (75000 to 500000) = 573.3
- Total state and local tax = 3224.55
