Calculation basis
Chinese New Year boundary computed from the modern Chinese calendar rules (new moons and major solar terms on China civil time), not from a Gregorian-year shortcut.
Worked out from Hong Kong Observatory, The Chinese Agricultural Calendar and The 24 Solar Terms and 3 other sources.
The zodiac year turns at Chinese New Year, not on 1 January, so births in January and early February belong to the previous animal.
Chinese New Year dates are computed from the new-moon and solar-term rules of the Chinese calendar. A new moon or solar term falling within a minute of China local midnight can move the published boundary by a day; check an official table for such cases.

Updates as you type
The zodiac year turns at Chinese New Year, so a January or February birth date often belongs to the previous animal.
Li Chun (the beginning of spring, about 4 February) is used by some BaZi schools and is deliberately excluded here.
HH:mm:ss. Only relevant to BaZi, whose hour-pillar convention is not settled in this version.
For example Asia/Shanghai. Only relevant to BaZi.

How this is worked out

5 steps
  1. Chinese New Year 2024 fell on 2024-02-10.
  2. 2024-02-10 is on or after that, so it belongs to the lunar year that began on 2024-02-10, labelled 2024.
  3. Animal index = (2024 - 2020) mod 12 = 4, which is the Dragon.
  4. Heavenly Stem = (2024 - 4) mod 10 = 0 (Jia); Earthly Branch = (2024 - 4) mod 12 = 4 (Chen).
  5. Jia is the Yang stem of Wood, so this is a Yang Wood Dragon year, number 41 of the 60-year cycle.

Its 5 worked examples are re-run on every release, last on 15 September 2026. What changed
