One item per line as "Name: score, weight". The weight may be a percentage of the course, a point value, or anything proportional. A score may be written 88, 88% or 44/50. Leave the weight off for an item that counts once. In average mode every weight is taken as 1.
Percentage points added to the raw score before the letter is assigned.
Letter:minimum percent pairs, e.g. "A:93, A-:90, B+:87, B:83, F:0".
The rounded percentage is what the letter grade is assigned from, matching gradebook practice.

How this is worked out

4 steps
  1. Weighted mean = (85 x 80 + 78 x 20) / 100 = 83.6%
  2. Percentage = 83.6 / 100 x 100 = 83.6%
  3. Rounded to 2 decimal place(s): 83.6%
  4. On the 10-point scale with plus/minus, 83.6% is a B.

University of California - Admissions, GPA requirement: how to calculate your UC GPA
Source for the UC scale: A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1, pluses and minuses do not count; one extra point per semester of a UC-approved honors course, D and F earn no honors point; at most 8 honors points between 10th and 11th grade and at most 4 of them from 10th grade; only a-g courses taken from the summer after 9th grade through the summer after 11th grade count.
US Department of Education, National Center for Education Statistics - High School Transcript Study methodology, standard grade-point conversion
Source for the conventional unweighted 4.0 scale used to convert transcript letter grades to grade points (A=4.0, B=3.0, C=2.0, D=1.0, F=0.0).
College Board - How to Convert Your GPA to a 4.0 Scale
Source for the plus/minus 4.0 scale (A+/A = 4.0, A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B- = 2.7, C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, C- = 1.7, D+ = 1.3, D = 1.0, D- = 0.7, F = 0.0) and the letter-to-percentage bands used with it.
National Association of Secondary School Principals / common US district practice - the 10-point and 7-point percentage grading scales
The 10-point scale (A 90-100, B 80-89, C 70-79, D 60-69, F below 60) is the dominant US convention; the 7-point scale (A 93-100, B 85-92, C 77-84, D 70-76, F below 70) is used by a minority of districts. Both are published district policy rather than a national standard, so the engine lets the user edit the cut-offs.
Weighted arithmetic mean: weighted_mean = sum(value x weight) / sum(weight)
The standard definition used for a weighted gradebook, matching the WEIGHTED-MEAN contract in the research corpus.
GED Testing Service, Understanding Your Scores: 100-200 score scale, 145 passing, 165 GED College Ready, 175 GED College Ready + Credit
