Order Operations Calculator
Order of Operations Calculator (PEMDAS / BODMAS) works out Result and Unrounded result from Expression, Mnemonic and Implied multiplication, e.g. 2(3+4). The default figures on this page give result of 3.5; change any entry and the result, the working and the sources update together.

8 steps
- PEMDAS (US): Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication and Division, Addition and Subtraction.
- Read as: 3 + 4 × 2 ÷ (1 - 5)^2
- 1. Parentheses → Subtraction: 1 - 5 = -4 → 3 + 4 × 2 ÷ (-4)^2
- 2. Exponent: (-4)^2 = 16 → 3 + 4 × 2 ÷ 16
- 3. Multiplication: 4 × 2 = 8 → 3 + 8 ÷ 16
- 4. Division: 8 ÷ 16 = 0.5 → 3 + 0.5
- 5. Addition: 3 + 0.5 = 3.5 → 3.5
- Result = 3.5

What the Order of Operations Calculator (PEMDAS / BODMAS) calculates
Evaluates an arithmetic expression one operation at a time in PEMDAS/BODMAS order and shows every intermediate expression, including the implied-multiplication reading of expressions like 8 ÷ 2(2+2).
How to use this Order of Operations Calculator (PEMDAS / BODMAS)
Enter Expression, Mnemonic and Implied multiplication, e.g. 2(3+4). Result updates as you type, and “Use a worked example” loads checked figures you can adjust. Change one figure at a time to see what drives the result.
How the result is worked out
Open “How this is worked out” beside the result for the step-by-step calculation behind Result, Unrounded result and Expression as parsed.
The method follows NIST Digital Library of Mathematical Functions, §1.1 Notation (operator precedence), ISO 80000-2, Quantities and units — Part 2: Mathematics and Wikipedia, "Order of operations".
Exponent before multiplication before subtraction example
With Expression: 1 - 2 * 3^4, the calculator returns Unrounded result: -161, Number of operations: 3. This example is checked against an independent source in the test suite.
What you can compare
Change one input at a time to see how it affects Result, Unrounded result and Expression as parsed. The inputs you can vary are Expression, Mnemonic and Implied multiplication, e.g. 2(3+4).
Results are general information, not financial, tax, legal, medical or engineering advice. Check any decision that matters with a qualified professional.

Frequently asked questions
Can you do order of operations on a calculator?
Evaluates an arithmetic expression one operation at a time in PEMDAS/BODMAS order and shows every intermediate expression, including the implied-multiplication reading of expressions like 8 ÷ 2(2+2). Put your own figures in above and the working updates beside the result. For scale, the default figures on this page give 3.5.
Is PEMDAS or PEMDAS correct?
It needs Expression, Mnemonic and Implied multiplication, e.g. 2(3+4). Nothing else is required, and the figures stay in your browser.
How do I calculate the PEMDAS rule?
Evaluates an arithmetic expression one operation at a time in PEMDAS/BODMAS order and shows every intermediate expression, including the implied-multiplication reading of expressions like 8 ÷ 2(2+2). Open “How this is worked out” beside the result to see each step for your own figures.
Does TI-84 do order of operations?
The result gives Result, Unrounded result, Expression as parsed, Step-by-step working, Number of operations and Mnemonic used, each labelled with its unit so the figure can be read on its own.
What information do I need for the Order of Operations Calculator (PEMDAS / BODMAS)?
You need Expression, Mnemonic and Implied multiplication, e.g. 2(3+4). The page opens with default figures that give result of 3.5, so you can see the scale before entering your own.
What does this Order of Operations Calculator (PEMDAS / BODMAS) show?
It shows Result, Unrounded result, Expression as parsed, Step-by-step working, Number of operations, Mnemonic used and Rule applied, with the working and any warnings for your entries.
