5 steps
- Solar transit (Dhuhr) is at 12:02 UT, 13:02 local.
- The Sun's declination at transit is 23.437 degrees; with a shadow factor of 1, Asr is when the Sun's altitude falls to arccot(1 + tan|51.5074 - 23.437|) = 33.1121 degrees.
- Sunrise and Maghrib are the crossings of -0.8333 degrees, which allows for refraction and the Sun's semidiameter.
- Fajr and Isha are the crossings of -18 and -17 degrees (Muslim World League (18 / 17)).
- All times shifted by the UTC offset +1 h to local clock time.

What the prayer time calculator calculates
The five daily prayer times plus sunrise for any date and location, solved from the Sun’s apparent altitude: Fajr and Isha at the twilight depression angles of the chosen authority (Muslim World League, ISNA, Egyptian, Karachi, Umm al-Qura or Tehran), Dhuhr at solar transit, Asr when the shadow has grown by one object-length (majority view) or two (Hanafi), and Maghrib at sunset. Times are given in local clock time for the UTC offset supplied.
How to use this prayer time calculator
Enter Date, Latitude, Longitude and UTC offset of local clocks. Fajr updates as you type, and “Use a worked example” loads checked figures you can adjust. Change one figure at a time to see what drives the result.
How the result is worked out
Open “How this is worked out” beside the result for the step-by-step calculation behind Fajr, Sunrise and Dhuhr.
The method follows Jean Meeus, Astronomical Algorithms, 2nd edition, chapters 15 (rising, transit and setting) and 25 (solar coordinates), PrayTimes.org, Calculation Methods (documented parameters of the recognised authorities) and US Naval Observatory, Astronomical Applications Department: rise, set and twilight definitions.
London on the summer solstice example
With Date: 2024-06-21, Latitude: 51.5074, Longitude: -0.1278, UTC offset of local clocks: 1, the calculator returns Sunrise: 04:43. This example is checked against an independent source in the test suite.
What you can compare
Change one input at a time to see how it affects Fajr, Sunrise and Dhuhr. The inputs you can vary are Date, Latitude, Longitude, UTC offset of local clocks, Calculation method and Asr.
Understanding Fajr, Sunrise and Dhuhr
Computed times can differ by a minute or two from a local mosque timetable, which may apply a safety margin, a local horizon correction or a different convention. Follow your local timetable where they differ.
