How this is worked out

4 steps
  1. Held from 2020-01-01 to 2026-01-01 = 72 full months.
  2. Fixed rate = 2% a year, compounded semiannually at 1% per half-year.
  3. Interest is credited for 72 months: 12 completed half-years plus 0 months at [1 + i/2]^(m/6).
  4. Value = 1126.84

31 CFR 351.32 - How are redemption values calculated for Series EE savings bonds
Gives the accrual formula FV = PV x [1 + (i/2)]^(m/6), rounded to the nearest cent, with m the full calendar months elapsed in the semiannual rate period; and the worked example $16.00 x [1 + (0.05/2)]^(5/6) = $16.33.
31 CFR 351.35 - Interest rates, penalties and redemption values for Series EE bonds issued May 1, 2005 or later
Interest accrues on the first day of each month and compounds semiannually; redemption before five years shortens the earning period by three months but may not reduce the value below the issue price; a book-entry bond is worth at least double its purchase price at original maturity.
TreasuryDirect - EE bonds
"EE bonds earn interest monthly. Interest is compounded semiannually." Bonds earn for 30 years; Treasury guarantees the bond doubles in value in 20 years. Cashing in before 5 years forfeits the last 3 months of interest.
TreasuryDirect - I bond interest rates
Composite rate = [fixed rate + (2 x semiannual inflation rate) + (fixed rate x semiannual inflation rate)]. Worked example: 0.0090 + (2 x 0.0167) + (0.0090 x 0.0167) = 0.0425503, published as 4.26%.
