How this is worked out

3 steps
  1. Risk budget = 20000 x 1% = 200
  2. Risk per unit = |50 - 45| x 1 = 5
  3. Position size = 200 / 5 = 40 shares

U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission - Cost Basis for Securities Transactions
Profit on a securities transaction is the realised proceeds less the acquisition cost basis; commissions and fees are part of what the investor actually pays and receives.
Fixed-fractional position sizing: shares = risk budget / risk per share
The risk budget is account equity times the fraction risked per trade; the risk per share is the distance from entry to the stop. Both halves are definitional, so the quotient is the largest lot whose stop-out loses exactly the budgeted amount.

What the traders calculator calculates

Works out the profit or loss on a share, crypto or futures trade from the buy price, sell price, quantity and both sides of commission, and reports the cost basis, gross proceeds, return percentage and the break-even sell price; it can also size a position from the amount of account equity you are willing to risk.

How to use this traders calculator
