Delay Time Calculator

Delay Time Calculator works out Delay time and Delay as a frequency from Tempo, Beats in a bar (time signature, upper number) and Beat unit (time signature, lower number). The default figures on this page give delay time of 375.000 ms; change any entry and the result, the working and the sources update together.

Summary
At 120 BPM a quarter note is 500 ms, a 4/4 bar is 2000 ms, and the chosen delay is 375 ms.

How this is worked out

4 steps
  1. One quarter note = 60,000 / 120 = 500 ms.
  2. A 4/4 bar holds 4 x 4/4 = 4 quarter notes, so it lasts 2000 ms.
  3. A dotted eighth note = 500 x 0.5 x 1.5 = 375 ms (2.6667 Hz).
  4. 32 bars run 64 seconds (1:04).

2017 · Delay time in milliseconds = 60,000 / BPM for a quarter-note delay, halved or doubled for shorter and longer note values; dotted values multiply by 1.5 and triplets by 2/3.
Grove Music Online / Oxford Dictionary of Music: Tempo, Metronome mark, Time signature
A metronome mark gives beats per minute against a stated note value, conventionally the quarter note; the time signature’s upper number counts beats in a bar and the lower number names the note value that takes one beat.

What the Delay Time Calculator calculates

Converts a tempo in beats per minute into the durations that follow from it: the length of a beat and of a bar in the given time signature, the length of every note value straight, dotted and as a triplet, the delay time in milliseconds and hertz for a chosen note value, and the running time of a number of bars. A beat is 60,000 / BPM milliseconds, and BPM counts quarter notes whatever the time signature’s lower number is.

How to use this Delay Time Calculator

Enter Tempo, Beats in a bar (time signature, upper number), Beat unit (time signature, lower number) and Note value for the delay. Delay time updates as you type. Change one figure at a time to see what drives the result.

How the result is worked out

Open “How this is worked out” beside the result for the step-by-step calculation behind Delay time, Delay as a frequency and One beat.

The method follows Roey Izhaki, Mixing Audio: Concepts, Practices and Tools, 3rd edition, chapter on delay and Grove Music Online / Oxford Dictionary of Music: Tempo, Metronome mark, Time signature.

What you can compare

Change one input at a time to see how it affects Delay time, Delay as a frequency and One beat. The inputs you can vary are Tempo, Beats in a bar (time signature, upper number), Beat unit (time signature, lower number), Note value for the delay, Straight, dotted or triplet and Number of bars.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate time delay?

Converts a tempo in beats per minute into the durations that follow from it: the length of a beat and of a bar in the given time signature, the length of every note value straight, dotted and as a triplet. Open “How this is worked out” beside the result to see each step for your own figures.

How to calculate delay time with BPM?

It needs Tempo, Beats in a bar (time signature, upper number), Beat unit (time signature, lower number), Note value for the delay, Straight, dotted or triplet and Number of bars. Nothing else is required, and the figures stay in your browser.

How to count delay?

The result gives Delay time, Delay as a frequency, One beat, One bar, Running time of the bars and Running time, each labelled with its unit so the figure can be read on its own.

What information do I need for the Delay Time Calculator?

You need Tempo, Beats in a bar (time signature, upper number), Beat unit (time signature, lower number), Note value for the delay, Straight, dotted or triplet and Number of bars. The page opens with default figures that give delay time of 375.000 ms, so you can see the scale before entering your own.

What does this Delay Time Calculator show?

It shows Delay time, Delay as a frequency, One beat, One bar, Running time of the bars, Running time, Bars a minute and Every note value in milliseconds, with the working and any warnings for your entries.

Can I check how the Delay Time Calculator result was calculated?

Yes. The “How this is worked out” section shows the calculation steps, and the sources section identifies the references used for the method.
